Can Inflammation Be Both Good and Bad?
Inflammation is your body's way of protecting itself from infection, illness and injury. It is the body's way of signaling the immune system to heal and repair damaged tissue, as well as defend itself against foreign invaders, such as viruses and bacteria.
There are actually two types of Inflammation – good and bad.
Acute inflammation is the good type and is the body's normal response to microbes, tissue damage or metabolic stress.
When it's good, it fights off foreign invaders, heals injuries and mops up debris within your body. But when it's bad, inflammation can ignite a long list of disorders such as arthritis, asthma, atherosclerosis, blindness, cancer, diabetes and quite possibly, autism and mental illness, Alzheimer's disease and other conditions.
As inflammation progresses, however, it can begin to damage your organs, arteries, and joints. It is important that Inflammation not be left unchecked,
Ideally, it is the goal to keep inflammation in check and not let it run wild.
The Symptoms of acute inflammation last several days. Subacute inflammation can last anywhere from 2–7 weeks. Chronic inflammation can continue for months or years.
Chronic inflammation is the 'bad' type and happens when the inflammation process goes on for too long, or if there is too much Inflammation.
When inflammation happens, chemicals from your body's white blood cells enter your blood or tissues to protect your body from invaders. This raises the blood flow to the area of injury or infection. It can cause redness and warmth. Some of the chemicals cause fluid to leak into your tissues, resulting in swelling.
What are the 5 classic signs of inflammation?
Based on visual observation, the ancients characterized inflammation by five cardinal signs:
• Redness

• Heat (only applicable to the body' extremities)
